The Moon in one minute

Good or bad?Neutral. It asks for care in an unclear time.
As a personSomeone whose feelings or motives are hard to read, or you when you are unsure.
As adviceSlow down. Check the facts and trust your intuition gently.
As a warningFear and illusion can make things look worse or different from the truth.
How to remember it: A moon with a face, a dog and a wolf howling, a crayfish in a pool and a winding path. Nothing is quite what it seems at night.

The Moon upright meaning

The Moon shows a full moon with a face, hanging between two towers. A dog and a wolf howl at it from either side of a winding path, and a crayfish crawls out of a pool in the foreground. The path leads away to distant mountains. Everything is half-lit, so things look different from how they are.

Upright, The Moon means uncertainty, illusion and a strong inner life. You may feel anxious, confused or full of vivid dreams. Things may not be what they seem, and your fears may be bigger in the dark. The card asks you to take your time, trust your intuition gently and wait for more light before you decide.

A real-life example: someone gets a vague message from a friend and spends the night imagining the worst. By morning, a short call shows it was nothing. The Moon is that half-lit night: feelings are real, but the facts are not clear yet.

Common mistake: Reading it as someone lying. It says things are unclear, not that anyone is deceiving you.

The Moon reversed meaning

Reversed, The Moon can mean the fog is lifting. Hidden things come to light, fears lose their hold and you start to see clearly. It can also mean confusion that you are pushing away instead of facing.

  • Signs: a sudden clearer view, relief, or a secret coming out. Or the reverse: ignoring a worry that keeps returning.
  • What may help: check the facts, ask direct questions and talk to someone you trust.

The Moon in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

Mixed signals or unspoken feelings. One or both partners may not be saying what they feel. Take time to ask clearly instead of guessing. Reversed, misunderstandings clear up.

If you’re single

You may feel unsure about someone, or about what you want. Do not decide in the fog. Reversed, the picture is getting clearer.

The Moon in career and money

An unclear situation at work, mixed information or doubts about a path. Gather facts before you decide. For money, avoid big decisions while things are unclear. Reversed, you get a clearer view.

The Moon as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. The Moon upright leans maybe: the picture is not clear yet. Reversed, it leans not yet: the fog is only starting to lift, so wait for clearer facts. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. For a quick one-card answer, try our free yes/no tarot reading.

The Moon and astrology

Most decks link The Moon to Pisces, the sign of dreams, intuition and the unseen. That suits a card about what is not yet clear. Systems vary, so follow your deck's guidebook if it says otherwise. To learn more, read about the planets in astrology.

How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.

What this page cannot do
