Death in one minute

Good or bad?Neutral. It is about change, and change can help.
As a personSomeone going through a big transition, or a person who helps you move on.
As adviceName what is ending, let it go and make room for what is next.
As a warningClinging to what is over makes the change harder.
How to remember it: A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, and the sun rises between two towers behind. The ending is also a dawn.

Death upright meaning

Death shows a skeleton in black armour riding a white horse and carrying a black flag with a white rose. People of every rank lie or kneel in front of it: a king has fallen, a bishop prays, and a young woman and a child look on. In the distance, the sun rises between two towers. The message is that endings come to everyone, and that a new day follows them.

Upright, Death means an ending, a transition or a deep change. It may be a job, a habit, a belief or a stage of life that is finished. The card does not predict a death. It says that something has run its course and that holding on will cost more than letting go.

A real-life example: someone has stayed in a job they outgrew for five years. Leaving feels like a small death. When they finally hand in their notice, the weight lifts and a new path opens. That is the Death card: a real ending that makes room.

Common mistake: Reading it as literal death. It almost never means that. It means endings and change.
A note of care: Death in tarot is a symbol of change. It does not predict anyone dying. If a hard time or thoughts of harming yourself are behind your question, tarot is not the right tool. In Canada you can call or text 9-8-8, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, any time.

Death reversed meaning

Reversed, Death points to resisting change, holding on to something that is over, or a slow ending that drags out. You may be afraid of what comes next, or stuck in the in-between.

  • Signs: clinging to the past, fear of change, delaying a decision you know is coming, or feeling stuck.
  • What may help: name what is ending, allow yourself to feel it, and take one small step toward what comes next.

Death in love and relationships

If you’re in a relationship

An ending in a relationship, or an old pattern that has to change for the bond to survive. It can mean a relationship moves into a new stage. Reversed, you may be holding on to something that is over.

If you’re single

You are closing a chapter, perhaps an old relationship or old expectations, so that something new can arrive. Be patient with yourself. Reversed, you may find it hard to let go of an ex or a past hurt.

Death in career and money

A job, project or career stage is ending, or a big change is on the way. For money, it can mean closing an old account or habit. It is usually a sign of change, not of disaster. Reversed, fear of change keeps you stuck.

Death as a yes or no answer

On this site every card follows one rule. Death upright leans not yet: something old needs to end before the new thing can begin. Reversed, it leans no: the pause has turned into a real stop. This is a guide for reflection, not a prediction. For a quick one-card answer, try our free yes/no tarot reading.

Quiz: does Death fit your situation?

Reflect on Death

Death and astrology

Most decks link Death to Scorpio, the sign of deep change, endings and renewal. That suits the card, which is about transformation more than loss. Systems vary, so follow your deck's guidebook if it says otherwise. To learn more, read about the planets in astrology.

How we made this page

Written and edited by the Centaurus team. We aim to be clear about what is tradition, what is our own reading, and what is fact.

How it works

We describe the card in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, give a plain meaning for upright and reversed, then add love, career and yes/no readings. The quiz and reflection tools are for thinking, and nothing you type is saved or sent.

Sources and background

  • Imagery and symbols: the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, drawn by Pamela Colman Smith for A.E. Waite (1909).
  • Meanings: informed by A.E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911, public domain) and modern teaching, then written in our own plain words.
  • Astrology links follow the Golden Dawn system. Other systems assign different signs and planets, and we say so on the page.
  • Yes or no rule on this site: every card leans Yes, Not yet, No or Maybe, and reversed cards shift one step more cautious.

What this page cannot do

Tarot cannot predict the future, and a card does not decide what you should do. Decks and readers differ, so meanings vary. It is not medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.
